The first Inter Pipeline AJHL Player of the Week for 2021 is Hunter Lamb of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. The 20 year-old centre earned 5 points (3G, 2A) in the opening games of an eight-game series versus the Spruce Grove Saints.
Lamb (Swift Current, SK) scored a goal on ‘re-opening night’ in a hard fought 4-3 shootout loss Friday. He would ensure a different fate on Saturday, scoring the game winning goal and solidifying the win with an empty net goal in a 6-4 win. Lamb also recorded 2 assists in the victory, pushing him into a tie for third in League scoring with 9 points (5G, 4A) alongside teammate Michael Hodge.
Spruce Grove Saints forward Jayden Davis made his own mark on the other side of the ice and has earned recognition as the Merit Contractors AJHL Rookie of the Week.
Davis, 18, opened the scoring three minutes into Friday’s game. He hit the scoreboard again on Saturday with a powerplay goal and an assist, which resulted in his selection as the Viterra Star of the Game for the second time this season. Davis (Calgary, AB) concluded the weekend with 3 points and sits in the AJHL Top 15 with 5 points (4G, 1A) in 5 games played.
Grande Prairie Storm defenceman Cade Mason picked up the season where he left off as the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. Mason recorded 3 assists in two games, bringing his point total to a league-leading 10 (1G, 9A), a lead he shares with Graham Gamache of the Spruce Grove Saints.
Mason (Red Deer, AB) had an assist on the game winner Saturday night as the Storm defeated the Drayton Valley Thunder 4-2. The 19 year-old alternate captain added two more assists on Sunday afternoon as the Storm fell short to the Whitecourt Wolverines 4-3.
