Landon’s Insights

All around a good Saturday night contest featuring rivals of the AJHL…

On this Saturday night I took in a scrappy affair between two rival combatants, Spruce Grove and St. Albert. The Steel could not find a nicer way to draw first blood breaking in 3-on-1 against a team that does not give up too many opportunities. The puck sits down for Steel star, Bryce Williamson, he rarely makes mistakes on situations such as these. He adds another one to his already impressive point total. Bryce is currently sitting in second place of league scoring with 91 points. This impressive play was short-lived as Saint’s game star, Jordan Draper, responds within a minute. After drawing even, there were some fist-a-cuffs to inspire the squads.  The Saints rely on the power play to get them ahead in this one, perfectly executed I might add. Simpson and Lazowski set up Kerr. The result is a lead for the Saints.

The home side Steel show some great resiliency by not allowing the game to get too far away from them in the middle frame. Halfway through the period they generate what is necessary courtesy of Fraser. The game is back on even footing. Home fans have to be excited about their team’s effort here.

Fast forward to the third, elite teams know how to use momentum to their advantage. The team from Spruce Grove always like to save something a little bit extra for the final frame. Once again they went into overdrive, scoring 3 unanswered goals. At game’s end the scoreboard read: 5-2 for the visitors.
