Scholarships Awarded at Annual AJHL Banquet

The Alberta Junior Hockey League in partnership with the Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society announced the 2010 League Scholarship recipients at the annual Scott Safety AJHL Scholarship Banquet in Fort McMurray, Alberta earlier this evening. Twenty-four scholarships totalling over $35,000, which range in value from $1,500 – $2,000 apiece, were awarded at the annual event.
The Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society scholarship program has provided $500,000 in scholarships since the program began in the early 1980s. In recent years the scholarships have expanded to include AJHL Alumni, Athletic Trainers and On-Ice Officials in addition to current players.
Charles S. Noble Scholarship
The Charles S. Noble Scholarship is awarded to players and alumni taking full-time courses at post-secondary schools in the province. Four Charles S. Noble Scholarships, presented from the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund and the Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society Scholarship Program, will be awarded to current players and alumni this season.

Nickerson Family Scholarship
The Nickerson Family Scholarship is awarded to honour the wife of long-time Fort McMurray Oil Barons’ supporter Dr. Ken Nickerson.

Al McDonald Memorial Award
The Al McDonald Memorial Award recognizes long-time Sherwood Park General Manager and Co-Owner Al McDonald.

Richard Warwick Memorial Scholarship
The Richard Warwick Memorial Scholarship is presented in honour of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons alumnus.

Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society Scholarship
Seventeen AJHL players, game officials and Alumni will be awarded a Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society Scholarship. The Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society Scholarships are awarded to the players, game officials and therapists who distinguish themselves in their pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.

The 2010 AJHL All-Star Weekend concluded on Saturday night after two action filled days in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The event opened on Friday, January 29th with the AJHL Semi-Annual Meeting and a regular season match-up between the North Division’s Spruce Grove Saints and the hometown Fort McMurray Oil Barons. On Saturday the Rural Alberta Midget Hockey League (RAMHL) held its Annual All-Star Game prior to the 2010 Scott Safety AJHL All-Star Game. The weekend concluded with the 2010 Scott Safety AJHL Scholarship Banquet hosted by Emcee Dan O’Toole of TSN`s SportsCentre. The Banquet included Guest Speakers Jeremy Roenick and Edmonton Oilers President & CEO Patrick LaForge along with recognition of the annual AJHL Scholarships.
