$52,000 in Scholarships Awarded at Annual Luncheon

Calgary, AB, January 31st, 2009 – The Alberta Junior Hockey League in partnership with the Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society announced the recipients of 30 scholarships at the 2009 Scott Safety AJHL Scholarship Banquet this afternoon.   Over $52,000 in scholarships ranging in value from $1,500 – $2,000 apiece were awarded at today’s annual event.

 

The Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society scholarship program has provided over $450,000 in scholarships since the program began in the early 1980s.  In recent years the scholarships have expanded to include AJHL Alumni, Athletic Trainers and On-Ice Officials as well as players.

 

The Charles S. Noble Scholarship is awarded to players and alumni taking full-time courses at post-secondary schools in the province.  Five Charles S. Noble Scholarships, presented from the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund and the Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society Scholarship Program, will be awarded to current players and alumni this season.

Kyler Brierley of the Calgary Royals has been awarded the Mark Goodkey Memorial Scholarship, which is the highest Charles S. Noble Scholarship.  It honours the late Fort Saskatchewan and University of Alberta Golden Bears defenceman.

The Nickerson Family Scholarship is awarded to honour the wife of long-time Fort McMurray Oil Barons’ supporter Dr. Ken Nickerson.

Five Players were selected as recipients of the Grande Prairie Storm RBC Legacy Scholarship.  This scholarship is a result of the successful 2004 RBC Royal Bank Cup held in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

All current AJHL players will be presented with their respective scholarships at an upcoming Alberta Junior Hockey League game in their home arena.

 

The AJHL Scholarship Banquet is an important component of the 2009 Scott Safety AJHL All-Star Weekend.  The weekend includes the AJHL Scholarship Banquet, AJHL All-Star Game and Reebok Shoot Out Competition at the Max Bell Centre, and AJHL Semi-Annual Meetings.
