6. Due to the league going back to 16 teams, the AJHL Board of Governors has adjusted the playoff format to the way it was in 2003-04.
The top seven (7) teams in each Division will make the play-offs. The (1st) first place team in each Division will receive a bye during the best-of-five first round mini-series divisional playoff.
Second Round – the first place team in each Division will play the lowest place remaining finisher in their Division after the first round play-off series and the next highest team will play the other team.
Third Round (League Semi-Finals) – the teams are re-seeded 1st through 4th (regular season winning percentage according to the AJHL Rules and Regulations) and will play each other in a best -of- seven series with the first place team playing the fourth place team. The winners will advance to the Rogers Wireless League Final for a best-of-seven series.
7. Overtime Play – after regulation time each team will be awarded one point. They will then play a five-minute 4 on 4 period followed by a 3 on 3 period of five minutes if the score is still tied. If the scored is tied at the end of the 3 on 3 Period it will remain as a tie game.
8. Family Day in Alberta will also be AJHL Day in Alberta. All teams will be playing whether at home or at a combined venue. Last year the League successfully played 3 games in one day at the home of the Edmonton Oilers (Rexall Place) and 2 games in one day at the Max Bell Centre in Calgary. Family Day in Alberta is February 20th, 2006.

The board also confirmed that the AJHL host city for the next Viking Cup will be Fort McMurray providing the Viking Cup governing body approves of the selection.
