Tanner Hickey Commits to University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers

The Spruce Grove Saints are proud to announce that 19-year-old defenceman Tanner Hickey (Leduc, AB) has committed to the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers for the upcoming 2019-2020 season. The Chargers compete in the NCAA Division I Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).

Before embarking on his college career, Hickey is currently completing a 3-year AJHL career with the Spruce Grove Saints, including a 2017-2018 championship.

In 39 regular season games played with the Saints this season, Hickey has compiled 11 goals and 12 assists accompanied with 43 PIMS. Adding to his career AJHL numbers which include 132 games played, 19 goals, 41 assists for a total of 60 points and 149 penalty minutes.

Alabama-Huntsville Chargers Head Coach, Mike Corbett, is excited to pick up a complete defencemen in Hickey, who is able to compete in every situation across all three zones.

The 5’10”, 170 lbs defenceman has been a valuable defender for the Saints over the past three seasons; possessing defensive zone shut down ability, as well as offensive firepower.

Saints General Manager, Rob Sklaruk, is proud to see another Saint provided the opportunity to continue his academic and athletic career at the NCAA Div I level.

“Tanner has been a leader both on and off the ice for us, he has a unique ability to play well in each zone at key times. He is a powerful skater with a great shot from the blue line, physical and a powerful skater. Alabama-Huntsville presents a great opportunity for him to continue his development at the next level,” Sklaruk commented. “We are excited to see Hicks (Tanner) advance his career in hockey while pursuing a university education. The Saints organization wishes Hickey nothing but the best and looks forward to following his career as a member of the UAH Chargers.

The Saints open up the AJHL Finals on the road this weekend Friday and Saturday against the Brooks Bandits before returning home to Spruce Grove on Monday and Tuesday, April 15th and 16th for games 3 and 4. All games at 7 pm.
