Sherwood Park, AB - The Sherwood Park Crusaders are proud to announce that '99 forward William Zapernick has committed to the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (NCAA, Div I) for the 2020-21 season.
“As an organization, we’d like to congratulate Will and his family on his commitment to the University of Alabama-Huntsville,” said General Manager Kyle Chase. “Will’s a player that works extremely hard for us every night at both ends of the ice, he’s an excellent student and also a fantastic person. We’re extremely proud of him.”
The University of Alabama-Huntsville, located in Huntsville, Alabama, is an NCAA Division I that play in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) conference. The Chargers are coached by Michael Corbett who has been with the university since the 2013-14 season.
Zapernick is in his second season with the Crusaders after joining them from the SSAC MAAA Athletic. In his first season with the Crusaders, the Edmonton native scored 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists) in 57 games and was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. In year two, in just 37 games Zapernick has already matched his total from last year and is third in team scoring. At the start of the season, the 1999-born forward was named an assistant captain for the Crusaders.
“For me, it just felt like the best opportunity. It’s a top end school, and the team has a lot of opportunities to succeed. The program is on the way up, and I wanted to be a part of it,” said William Zapernick. “First off, I’d like to thank my parents for fully investing in me and helping me every step of the way through both hockey and life giving me the opportunity to succeed. And secondly, the Sherwood Park Crusaders organization for giving me the opportunity on the ice as well as top-notch coaching to help bring my game to the next level and get me ready to play Division 1 hockey”.
Zapernick is the sixth Crusader to earn an NCAA Division I scholarship during the 2018/2019 season, joining Carter Gylander (Colgate University), Garrett Clegg (Robert Morris University), Brett Wieschorster (University of Vermont), Carter Savoie, and Michael Benning (University of Denver).
The Crusaders wish to congratulate William and his family on this outstanding achievement and his numerous contributions to the organization, both on and off the ice.
