AJHL and Evolution Hockey Announce New Scholarship

January 15, 2013 - The Alberta Junior Hockey League and Evolution Hockey are proud to announce the creation of a new scholarship for AJHL players – the Evolution Hockey Award for Perseverance and Dedication.  A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a current AJHL player beginning in the Spring of 2014.

The Evolution Hockey Award for Perseverance and Dedication was developed to promote post-secondary education by assisting students currently playing in the AJHL.    Eligible applicants must be committed to attend a post-secondary institution either in Canada or the United States for the following season, and have completed (or will be completing) at least one full season in the League.

”We are very excited about this partnership with the AJHL”, said Evolution Hockey owners Chad Shiel and Jay Blakley. “As alumni, the league holds a special place in our hearts and we feel that it is very important to support the AJHL and its players in their athletic and scholastic endeavours. We are extremely honored to sponsor this award and scholarship for the league, given the number of alumni, current and future AJHL players that currently participate in Evolution Hockey programs.”

Jay Blakley was a member of the Bonnyville Pontiacs in 1991-1992 and Chad Shiel played for the Calgary Royals, Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves and Grande Prairie Storm from 1997-2001.

Applicants will be required to provide two quality reference letters, and an essay outlining their qualifications for the award.  The essay will describe the challenges the player has faced in their life and in hockey, and outline how these challenges have assisted the player in their pursuit of hockey and education.

Gas Drive AJHL Scholarship Program

The nGas Drive AJHL Scholarship Program will provide one current or former AJHL Athlete with a $1,500 scholarship towards their post secondary education at the conclusion of each season.  The scholarship is awarded to the player deemed most deserving among the sixteen applicants (one per AJHL team).  Applicants are required to submit an essay describing what they have learned from playing hockey and how they can apply this in their lives after hockey.

The Alberta Junior Hockey League is proud to partner with Gas Drive as the title sponsor of the League Championship.  The first AJHL Gas Drive Cup will be awarded to the AJHL Champion at the conclusion of the 2013 Playoffs and will be the ultimate goal of every team for the next five seasons.

RBC Junior A Scholarship

The RBC Junior A Scholarship recipients from each of the 10 leagues within the Canadian Junior Hockey League are eligible for the National RBC Junior A Scholarship.  The 10 recipients each receive $1,000 towards their post-secondary education and are eligible for the $5,000 National RBC Junior A Scholarship.

The annual scholarship provides financial assistance to players of the Canadian Junior Hockey League for their post-secondary education.  Players eligible for the RBC Junior A Scholarship must be a Canadian citizen, on a Canadian Junior A team roster, and registered in or applying for full-time post-secondary studies. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievements, Junior A success, and community involvement.

The winner of the $5,000 National RBC Junior A Scholarship is selected by a national panel of Hockey Canada appointed junior hockey representatives.
